Temple of Edfu
Dedicated to the deity Horus and located on a hill overlooking the Nile, the spectacular Temple of Edfu is considered to be the best preserved of the Ancient Egyptian shrines.
The walls of the Temple of Edfu are richly inscribed with inscriptions that provide important information about the period in which it was built, giving details not only about the temple but also about mythology, religion and the way of life in Ancient Egypt.
A survivor
After non-Christian worship was banned in 391, the Temple of Edfu was attacked by Christians, who destroyed much of its reliefs in order to destroy all traces of its religious imagery.
Despite this, the temple was preserved almost perfectly by being buried under more than 12 metres of desert sand for years. Some houses were built over it to protect it until 1860 when archaeological work began to unearth the temple.
